Guitar Practise Saturday 16 Dec 17

Practised for half an hour.

I started off with the warm-up exercise from Monday, I find quite difficult to do so I spent a while on this.

Then I went over the chord changes from Friday, but unlike yesterday I had problems with the B chord.

I just could not get as clear a sound as yesterday, it was down to the index finger on the fretting hand.

Unlike yesterday I just could not get that finger into the right position to give me a clear note.

When I got fed up with that or should I say started getting frustrated, I went onto the Christmas challenge song and was quite surprised that I remembered it.

I can play it all the way through without looking at the TAB, I just need to be able to play it fast enough so that it sounds like it should.

Guitar Practise Friday 15 Dec 17

Practise for forty-five minutes.

I really enjoyed todays lesson it was major chords in the key of E, so the chords were E, A and B.

When I first saw the chords I thought it was going to be hard changing to B, I find going from A to E easy enough.

I was surprised at how quick I was able to get the B chord, up till now I have found it difficult to change from open chords to barre chords.

It’s only one barre chord but it is a start.

Another thing I was surprised with was being able to play the full chord and not use the barre on the D, G and B strings.

Guitar Practise Tuesday 12 Dec 17

Practised for an hour.

The lesson for today was really enjoyable, it was a finger style lesson using the thumb and two fingers.

It was one of those where I had to watch the video a few time to learn what was required.

Once I grasped it I then practised it using the TAB sheet, the tempo this was to be played at was 80 BPM, I did not quite manage to get this while practising it.

I wanted to move on to the song from last week and see if I could get up to 120 BPM, I managed to get to 100 before things started going wrong.

I think with a little more practise I could get better at 100, but it still did not sound like it should, in the medium speed video you can grasp what the song is.

I am not sure what tempo this is played at, but it sounds a lot better than what I have been playing.

Guitar Practise Monday 11 Dec 17

It’s back to a lesson a day, today’s lesson was a warm up with a finger style pattern using the thumb and three fingers.

Initially we were told to put a finger on each string starting at fret one E string, fret two on the A string, fret three on the D string and fret four on the G string.

It was a bit of a stretch placing them all on at the same time, but we were told we could place a finger as we played each string.

This way made it easier to do the exercise, when you had played all four notes you moved down on string.

And repeated this till you got down to the high E, once you reached the high E you went back to the low E but one fret further down the neck.

For the purpose of the video Tony only went down to the fifth fret, but if you wanted you could go all the way down the neck.

And as you got further down the neck the easier it was to put all four fingers on the frets at the same time.

Once I was happy with this I moved on to the song we learnt last week, I played it at my own tempo.

I went over the first four parts and tried to play them faster, I seemed to be able to play it quite fast but nowhere near 120 BPM.

Guitar Practise Sunday 10 Dec 17

Guitar practise one hour.

I had a better practise today, this was the last day of the lessons for this song.

I started playing it at my pace, and then watched the fast video for today’s lesson.

I then tried to play along with it, and I was close to playing at that tempo I was just lagging a little bit.

I trained with the metronome for a while and managed to play fine at 80BPM, I didn’t start at this level I worked up to it.

The TAB sheet says it should be played at 120 BPM so as you can see I am a long way from that tempo.

If I can just make it sound like it is supposed to I would be very happy.

Guitar Practise Friday 08 Dec 17

I bet you are on the edge of your seats waiting for today’s post.

I wish it was going to be a riveting read, but I am finding it hard to come up with something to write, because the song just keeps repeating itself with the odd unusual chord thrown in.

It’s much easier to find something to write about when you have different lesson each day.

I played the song along with the metronome like I mentioned yesterday, and as I said it was going to be slow and steady.

I played it at 80 BPM and was only just managing to keep up, and it still sounds nothing like it should.

We are supposed to be able to play this by New Years Eve, I wonder what year Tony was thinking of.

Her is another of Eric’s videos.

Guitar Practise Thursday 07 Dec 17

Practised for thirty minutes today.

We are now on part five of the song we are learning, it was not so hard to pickup because it was a repeat of a previous lesson.

I spent all of my practise time playing the whole song, or should all the parts I have learned so far.

I tried to play at the speed that it should be played at, I missed a lot of notes and hit the wrong string a few times.

So you can imagine how it sounded, the only way I can think of increasing the speed would be to do it with the metronome.

Slow and steady at first increasing the tempo as I go along.

I have included this video by Eric Blackmond, if you have not seen any of Eric’s lessons then let this is a good starting point.

Guitar Practise Wednesday 06 Dec 17

Practised for an hour today.

Another easy to pick up lesson, this is the first lesson I have had where I have been able to play along with the slow video shortly after learning it.

I hope this is a sign that I am getting better.

I had to look at the TAB today so that I could remember the other three lessons, but it did not take long to get back into it.

I was so happy with my results today that I played the song for my wife.

I played it to the best of my abilities but it did not come anywhere near to how it should sound, when I told her what it was supposed to be she said she’d not heard it played like that before.

When I played back the video of Tony playing it at the speed it should be played, it occurred to me that I have a long way to go.

Guitar Practise Tuesday 5 Dec 17

Practised for fifty minutes today.

I really surprised myself by playing the first two parts without looking at the TAB, I played it for a while before going on to todays lesson.

Today’s lesson was also easy to pickup and after a while I started playing the whole thing with the metronome at 80 BPM.

But I had to go over it a few times before I could play the whole thing at this tempo, I noticed that I was missing a note.

At one point I was getting annoyed with myself, because other faults started creeping in but I stuck with it, and stopped when I was happy with how it sounded.

Over all I am happy with the way it is going with these lessons and I actually feel like I am making progress.

Guitar Practise Monday 04 Dec 17

Practise for an hour and fifteen.

After doing my warm up exercises I went back to yesterdays lesson before starting on todays.

I went over it a quite a few times, and after a while I played it along with the metronome starting at 60 BPM and managed to play it at 90 BPM.

I then tried to play along with the slowest video but struggled with it.

I then started on todays lesson, it was easier to get then yesterdays and after a short time I was able to put yesterdays lesson and todays together.

By the time I came to the end of my practise today I had memorised both parts, and could play them at 90 BPM.

The forefinger on my fretting hand was used a lot in these lessons, and was quite sore by the time i finished my practise for today.
